Spirit Airlines Baggage Fees: What You Need to Know

Spirit Airlines is well-known for its low base fares, but passengers should be prepared for additional charges, particularly for baggage. Understanding these fees can help travelers plan their budgets and avoid unexpected costs at the airport.

1. Free Allowance

Spirit Airlines operates on an "unbundled" pricing model. The ticket price includes:

  • One personal item: Dimensions must not exceed 18" x 14" x 8" (e.g., a small backpack, purse, or laptop bag).

  • Checked bags, carry-on bags, or oversized personal items are not included in the base fare and require additional payment.

2. Carry-On Bags

A carry-on bag must not exceed 22" x 18" x 10", including handles and wheels. Fees for carry-on luggage vary depending on when and how they are purchased:

  • During booking: $49–$69 (price varies by route and booking conditions).

  • After booking (via Spirit’s website or app): Slightly higher than at booking.

  • At the airport counter or gate: Up to $100 or more.

3. Checked Baggage

Checked bag prices depend on the route, time of purchase, and the bag's weight:

  • First checked bag: $48–$72 (online), up to $100 at the airport.

  • Second checked bag: Typically $58–$83.

  • Third and additional bags: Around $85–$95.

Weight Limits:

  • Bags over 40 lbs (18 kg) incur overweight fees:

    • 41–50 lbs: $79

    • 51–70 lbs: $125

    • 71–100 lbs: $150

  • Bags exceeding 100 lbs are not accepted.

Size Limits:

  • Bags over 62 linear inches (L + W + H) incur an oversized fee starting at $150.

4. Special Items

Sporting equipment, musical instruments, and other oversized or fragile items often fall under special rules. Fees vary but typically align with the checked baggage rates, plus any oversize or overweight surcharges.

5. Discount Options

Joining Spirit’s $9 Fare Club or Free Spirit membership can help reduce baggage fees. Additionally, purchasing baggage at the time of booking is usually the cheapest option.

6. Tips to Save

  • Prepay: Book baggage online in advance to lock in lower rates.

  • Pack light: Stick to a free personal item if possible.

  • Weigh bags: Avoid overweight fees by checking the weight at home.

  • Bundle with a package: Some bundles include baggage discounts.
